Gilman Blog Dec21 Heating

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and we want to help keep it that way! With colder weather hitting Virginia, it’s important to make sure that we are practicing safe heating methods.

  1. Indoor space heaters are great, but it’s important to remember to turn them off when you leave the room. If you are purchasing a new one this year, find one with a tip-over switch to be sure it turns off if it falls over.
  2. A wood-burning fire is also nice this time of year, but make sure to follow a few best practices. Make sure the flue is open before starting your fire. Make sure you are using dry wood. Using smaller pieces will also produce less smoke. Make sure you always use your safety screen as well. And, of course, never leave a fire unattended.
  3. It is also important to have your heating unit checked annually. This will make ensure it is running efficiently and will save you money on your energy bill.
