Furnace Won’t Turn On? A Richmond, VA Homeowner’s Checklist

The first cold night in Central Virginia is a common time to discover that a furnace will not start. It may have worked normally last winter, but months of sitting idle can reveal a dead thermostat battery, a switched-off power supply, restricted airflow, or an ignition problem.

If your furnace won’t turn on, begin with the simple checks below. Work through them in order rather than repeatedly resetting the equipment. Homeowners in Richmond, Midlothian, Chesterfield, and Mechanicsville can safely resolve some basic issues, but anything involving gas, internal wiring, or a failed safety control belongs with a trained HVAC technician.

Stop Immediately if You Notice a Safety Warning

Do not troubleshoot the furnace if you smell an odor similar to rotten eggs, hear gas escaping, see smoke, or have a carbon monoxide alarm sounding. Leave the home immediately. Do not operate lights, appliances, or electrical switches on the way out, and do not use a phone until you are outside. From a safe location, contact your gas provider or emergency services.

What to Check When Your Furnace Won’t Turn On

1. Start With the Thermostat

Make sure the thermostat is set to Heat, not Cool, Off, or Fan. Raise the set temperature a few degrees above the current room temperature and give the system several minutes to respond. Some thermostats intentionally delay startup.

If the display is blank or fading, replace the batteries. Check that a programmable thermostat is not following an away, vacation, or energy-saving schedule. A thermostat that clicks without starting the furnace may be sending the call for heat correctly, which points to a problem elsewhere in the system.

2. Check the Furnace Switch and Circuit Breaker

Gas and oil furnaces still require electricity for their controls, ignition components, and blower. Look for a switch near the furnace that resembles a standard light switch and confirm that it is on. It can be turned off accidentally when someone is working or storing items near the equipment.

Next, find the breaker labeled Furnace, Heat, or HVAC. If it has tripped, move it fully to Off and then back to On once. If the breaker trips again, stop. Repeatedly resetting it could worsen an electrical problem and will not correct the underlying fault.

3. Inspect the Air Filter and Vents

A severely clogged filter can restrict airflow enough to overheat the furnace and activate a protective shutdown. Turn off power to the equipment before removing the filter. Replace it if it is coated with dust, and install the new filter with its airflow arrow pointing toward the furnace.

Make sure return grilles and supply registers are open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Restoring airflow may help, but a furnace that remains off or repeatedly overheats needs professional diagnosis.

4. Make Sure the Access Panel Is Secure

Many furnaces have a door safety switch that prevents operation when the blower compartment panel is loose or incorrectly installed. If the panel was recently removed for a filter change or inspection, make sure it is seated according to the owner’s manual.

Never tape down, hold, or bypass a door switch. Do not press internal rollout, limit, or reset switches. These controls can shut the furnace down because of overheating, venting, flame, or other safety concerns that require a technician.

5. Observe the Pilot Light or Ignition Sequence

Most newer furnaces use an electronic igniter rather than a standing pilot light. You may hear the inducer start, followed by clicking or an ignition attempt. If the system tries to light and then shuts down, the cause could be an igniter, flame sensor, pressure switch, gas supply, or control problem.

Do not touch an electronic igniter or open the burner compartment. Igniters are fragile, become extremely hot, and should be tested by a professional. If an older furnace has a standing pilot, only attempt to relight it when the manufacturer’s instructions are available and you do not smell gas. If the pilot will not light or stay lit, schedule service.

6. Look for an Error Code

Some furnaces display a diagnostic code through a small viewing window. Record the flashing-light pattern and check the chart on the furnace panel or in the owner’s manual. The code can give your technician a useful starting point. It is not permission to remove panels or repair an internal component yourself.
